TransCyte is a bioengineered temporary skin substitute used for the treatment of partial-thickness and full-thickness thermal burns. It consists of a nylon mesh seeded with human neonatal fibroblasts that secrete a bioactive extracellular matrix containing collagen type I, fibronectin, glycosaminoglycans, and various growth factors. The mesh is coated with porcine collagen and bonded to a semipermeable silicone membrane that serves as a moisture vapor barrier. Before clinical application, the product is cryopreserved, a process that renders the fibroblasts non-viable while preserving the structural and biochemical integrity of the matrix and growth factors. TransCyte provides a protective environment that promotes re-epithelialization and reduces the need for immediate autografting.
