Overview

Transferrin is a naturally occurring glycoprotein that serves as the primary iron transport protein in the bloodstream, delivering iron to various tissues. It is currently under investigation as a potential therapeutic agent for iron overload anemias, such as Sickle Cell Anemia and Beta-Thalassemia. Research indicates that exogenous transferrin administration can reverse iron overload by binding free iron, thereby reducing oxidative stress, and can improve anemia by modulating iron availability for erythropoiesis.
