Transferrin receptor antibody refers to a class of monoclonal antibodies designed to target the transferrin receptor (TfR), also known as CD71. TfR is highly expressed on the surface of rapidly proliferating cells, including many types of cancer cells, as well as on the blood-brain barrier (BBB) endothelium. In the context of oncology, such as multiple myeloma, these antibodies function by blocking the interaction between TfR and iron-carrying transferrin, thereby depriving tumor cells of essential iron and inhibiting their growth and survival. Additionally, TfR antibodies are extensively utilized as molecular shuttles to facilitate the transport of therapeutic payloads across the blood-brain barrier into the central nervous system.
