Overview

Transfluthrin is a fast-acting synthetic pyrethroid insecticide with low persistency, primarily used as a household insecticide and mosquito repellent. It is effective against flies, mosquitoes, moths, cockroaches, wasps, and hornets. Transfluthrin acts as both a contact and inhalation agent due to its relatively high volatility. Its mechanism of action involves modulation of insect voltage-gated sodium channels—specifically by inducing persistent currents in these channels—which leads to paralysis and death in insects. Transfluthrin is significantly more toxic to insects than mammals because of differences in sodium channel sensitivity and body physiology[1][5][6]. It is available commercially in products such as liquid vaporizers and mosquito coils for indoor use[3][5]. The compound has the molecular formula C15H12Cl2F4O2.
