Overview

Tranylcypromine is a nonselective, irreversible monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) used primarily as an antidepressant for the treatment of major depressive disorder, especially in patients who have not responded to other antidepressants. It works by inhibiting the enzyme monoamine oxidase, thereby increasing levels of neurotransmitters such as norepinephrine, dopamine, and serotonin in the brain. Structurally related to amphetamine derivatives, tranylcypromine is also classified as a phenylcyclopropylamine. It has demonstrated efficacy in atypical depression and anxiety-related mood disorders and may be considered for panic disorder or obsessive-compulsive disorder when other treatments fail. Research suggests it can inhibit lysine-specific demethylase 1A (LSD1), with potential implications for cancer therapy[4][5][7].
