Drug intelligence / Profile preview
DuoTrav APS is a fixed-dose combination ophthalmic solution developed by Alcon for the treatment of open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension. It contains two active ingredients: travoprost, a synthetic prostaglandin F2α analogue that increases uveoscleral outflow of aqueous humor, and timolol maleate, a non-selective beta-adrenergic receptor antagonist that reduces aqueous humor production. The 'APS' designation refers to the Advanced Preservative System, a formulation designed to be gentler on the ocular surface than traditional benzalkonium chloride (BAK)-preserved drops. Clinical studies have evaluated DuoTrav APS for its ability to lower intraocular pressure while maintaining or improving ocular surface health compared to other prostaglandin/beta-blocker combinations like Xalacom. The APS formulation typically utilizes Polyquad (polyquaternium-1) as an alternative preservative.
