Trazodone is an oral antidepressant medication belonging to the phenylpiperazine class. It is classified as a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (SARI). Trazodone is primarily used to treat major depressive disorder and can also be prescribed for anxiety disorders and insomnia. It works by modulating serotonin activity in the brain to help restore mental balance. Due to its sedative effects, it is sometimes used off-label for sleep disturbances. Common side effects include dry mouth, dizziness, vomiting, headache; more serious side effects may include suicidal thoughts or behaviors (especially in young people), mania or hypomania in bipolar disorder patients, irregular heart rate (arrhythmia), and priapism (prolonged erection). The drug was approved for medical use in the United States in 1981[1][2][3].
