Overview
Trazodone hydrochloride prolonged-release is a small molecule antidepressant developed by Lee's Pharmaceutical Limited for the treatment of major depressive disorder in the Chinese population. Classified as a serotonin antagonist and reuptake inhibitor (SARI), its mechanism of action involves the inhibition of the serotonin transporter (SERT) and the antagonism of serotonin 5-HT2A and 5-HT2C receptors. Additionally, it acts as an antagonist at histamine H1 and alpha-1-adrenergic receptors, which contributes to its sedative properties. This prolonged-release formulation is designed for once-daily administration to provide stable plasma levels throughout the day, which may improve tolerability and patient compliance compared to immediate-release versions. The drug has undergone Phase 3 clinical evaluation in China and was approved by the NMPA for the treatment of depression.
