Overview
The tree nut SLIT-tablet is an investigational allergen immunotherapy (AIT) being developed by ALK for the treatment of tree nut allergy. This therapeutic utilizes ALK's proprietary sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) tablet technology, which delivers standardized tree nut allergen extracts in a fast-dissolving tablet formulation designed for oral mucosal absorption. The mechanism of action focuses on inducing systemic immune tolerance by regularly exposing the patient to the specific proteins responsible for their allergic hypersensitivity. This process aims to shift the immune response from a Th2-driven allergic pathway toward a regulatory T-cell (Treg) and Th1-mediated tolerant state, characterized by the production of allergen-specific IgG4 antibodies that block IgE-mediated mast cell activation. The goal of the therapy is to desensitize patients, thereby reducing the risk of severe systemic reactions, including anaphylaxis, upon accidental exposure to tree nuts.
