Overview

Trehalose hyaluronic acid (T-HA) is an intra-articular injectable formulation designed for the treatment of symptomatic knee osteoarthritis. It combines sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) with trehalose, a disaccharide that acts as a stabilizer and antioxidant. In this formulation, trehalose serves to protect the hyaluronic acid from enzymatic degradation by hyaluronidase and oxidative stress, thereby extending its therapeutic residence time and efficacy within the joint. Beyond its role as a stabilizer, trehalose helps reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and mitigate oxidative damage to chondrocytes. The drug has been evaluated in Phase IV clinical trials led by the OASI Bioresearch Foundation, demonstrating potential advantages over standard medium molecular weight sodium hyaluronate in improving joint function and reducing pain.
