Trepibutone is a synthetic small molecule derivative of butyric acid that acts as a choleretic and antispasmodic agent. It is primarily indicated for the treatment of hepatobiliary and pancreatic disorders, including cholelithiasis (gallstones), cholecystitis, biliary tract dyskinesia, and post-cholecystectomy syndrome, as well as chronic pancreatitis. The drug functions by stimulating the secretion of bile and pancreatic juice while simultaneously exerting a relaxant effect on the smooth muscles of the biliary tract and the sphincter of Oddi. This dual action facilitates the flow of bile into the duodenum and helps alleviate symptoms associated with biliary stasis and spasms. Trepibutone was developed by Kyowa Hakko Kogyo (now Kyowa Kirin) and has been clinically utilized in several Asian markets, particularly Japan.
