Overview

Tretoquinol is a synthetic small molecule classified as a direct-acting sympathomimetic agent and selective beta 2-adrenoceptor agonist. It acts primarily as a bronchodilator by selectively stimulating beta 2-adrenoceptors in bronchial smooth muscle, leading to relaxation of the airways and relief of bronchoconstriction. Tretoquinol is used for the treatment of respiratory conditions such as asthma, asthmatic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other forms of bronchitis associated with airway constriction. Its mechanism involves activation of adenylate cyclase via beta 2-receptor stimulation, increasing intracellular cAMP levels and promoting bronchodilation. The drug has been shown to be effective in reducing airway resistance and improving lung function in patients with obstructive airway diseases[1][3][4][6]. Adverse effects may include palpitations, tremor, headache, dizziness, tachycardia, muscle cramps, peripheral vasodilatation, hypokalaemia or hyperglycaemia[4]. Concurrent use with catecholamines like epinephrine or isoproterenol can increase the risk of arrhythmias or cardiac arrest[1].
