Trevicta

Trevicta (paliperidone palmitate) is a long-acting injectable atypical antipsychotic developed by Janssen-Cilag for the maintenance treatment of schizophrenia in adults. It is a 3-monthly formulation of paliperidone palmitate, the active metabolite of risperidone. The drug acts primarily as an antagonist at dopamine D2 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors, while also exhibiting antagonistic activity at alpha-1 and alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and H1 histaminergic receptors. It is administered via intramuscular injection every three months, providing a prolonged-release profile that improves treatment adherence and reduces the risk of relapse in clinically stable patients. The European Commission approved Trevicta in 2016, following its approval in the United States as Invega Trinza in 2015.
