Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tri-Shield First Defense is a USDA-licensed, colostrum-derived veterinary biologic given as a single oral gel dose to newborn beef and dairy calves to provide passive immunity against K99+ Escherichia coli, bovine coronavirus, and bovine rotavirus, three major causes of neonatal calf diarrhea (scours). It consists of highly concentrated bovine immunoglobulins from hyperimmunized colostrum that bind and neutralize these enteric pathogens in the gastrointestinal tract and, when administered before gut closure, are partially absorbed systemically and later re-secreted into the gut, extending protection. The product is positioned as an antibody therapy rather than a vaccine, eliminating the need for dam- or calf-level scours vaccination, and has been shown in controlled studies to reduce mortality, morbidity, severity and duration of scours, and rotavirus shedding in newborn calves.
