Overview

Tri-Solfen is a topical anesthetic and antiseptic gel formulation originally developed for veterinary use to provide pain relief during routine husbandry procedures in livestock, such as mulesing, castration, and tail docking. It is a combination product containing two local anesthetics (lidocaine and bupivacaine), a vasoconstrictor (epinephrine), and an antiseptic (cetrimide). The formulation is designed to provide rapid onset and prolonged duration of anesthesia while minimizing blood loss and infection risk. Beyond its established veterinary applications, the drug has been investigated in human clinical trials for the management of pain associated with surgical debridement of chronic leg ulcers. The product was developed by Animal Ethics Pty Ltd and its human health counterpart, Medical Ethics Pty Ltd, and is commercialized through partnerships with companies such as Elanco (following its acquisition of Bayer Animal Health) and Dechra Pharmaceuticals.
