Overview

Triafemi is a triphasic combined oral contraceptive marketed by the pharmaceutical company Effik. It consists of a combination of norgestimate, a third-generation progestogen, and ethinylestradiol, a synthetic estrogen. The medication is specifically indicated for oral contraception in women who also present with mild to moderate acne. As a triphasic formulation, Triafemi utilizes three different tablet compositions throughout a 21-day cycle, where the dose of norgestimate increases in stages while the ethinylestradiol dose remains constant. Its primary mechanism of action is the suppression of gonadotropins, which inhibits ovulation. Additionally, it induces changes in the cervical mucus to increase viscosity and alters the endometrium to reduce the likelihood of implantation. The drug is approved and marketed in France.
