Overview

This is a combination injection used as a control treatment in a clinical trial conducted by Loma Linda University for subacromial impingement syndrome and partial thickness rotator cuff tears. It consists of the corticosteroid triamcinolone acetonide (Kenalog) and the local anesthetics lidocaine and ropivacaine. Triamcinolone acetonide is a synthetic glucocorticoid that exerts anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by binding to the glucocorticoid receptor, thereby inhibiting the production of inflammatory mediators. Lidocaine and ropivacaine are aminoamide-type local anesthetics that block voltage-gated sodium channels, providing immediate pain relief. This combination is administered via subacromial injection to reduce inflammation and pain associated with rotator cuff syndrome.
