Overview

Triazolam is a short-acting benzodiazepine used primarily for the short-term treatment of insomnia and certain circadian rhythm sleep disorders. It acts as a central nervous system depressant by enhancing the inhibitory effects of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor, leading to sedative, hypnotic, anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant properties. Triazolam is characterized by its rapid onset and short half-life (approximately 2 hours), making it suitable for initiating sleep without causing significant next-day drowsiness. It is also sometimes used as an adjunct in medical or dental procedures requiring sedation or to reduce anxiety during brief events. The drug was developed for oral administration and has been marketed under the brand name Halcion[1][3][4][5][7].
