Overview

Tribulus terrestris saponins are a group of steroidal saponin compounds extracted from the plant Tribulus terrestris. These compounds are considered the primary bioactive constituents responsible for many of the purported pharmacological effects attributed to Tribulus terrestris extracts. Saponins from this plant have been studied for their anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antihypertensive, and potential anticancer properties. Mechanistically, they have been shown to modulate inflammatory cytokine expression (such as TNF-α and IL-6), inhibit nitric oxide production in immune cells stimulated by lipopolysaccharides, induce apoptosis in cancer cell lines via caspase activation and ERK pathway modulation, inhibit nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathways, and exhibit ACE-inhibitory activity that may contribute to blood pressure reduction. In animal models and some human studies, these saponins also demonstrate protective effects against oxidative stress and may influence hormone levels through hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis modulation[2][5][4]. However, clinical evidence supporting efficacy for most indications is limited or inconclusive.
