Overview

Tricarbonylperrhenato(bathophen)rhenium(I), also known as PR-6, is an organometallic rhenium(I) complex being investigated as a potential anticancer agent, specifically for the treatment of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Developed by researchers including Santosh Mandal and Santanu Bhattacharya, PR-6 is designed to offer a safer alternative to traditional platinum-based chemotherapeutics by selectively targeting cancer cells while minimizing systemic toxicities like nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity. Its mechanism of action involves the modulation of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway, specifically through the downregulation of phosphorylated MEK (pMEK) and phosphorylated P38 (pP38) protein expression. In preclinical studies using the metastatic pancreatic cancer cell line AsPC-1, PR-6 demonstrated significant inhibition of cell growth, migration, and survival.
