Overview

Trichloroacetic acid is a synthetic analogue of acetic acid in which all three hydrogen atoms of the methyl group are replaced by chlorine atoms. It is a strong, corrosive organic acid that appears as a colorless crystalline solid and is highly soluble in water. In medicine, it is primarily used topically as a cauterant and keratolytic agent for the treatment of genital and anal warts (caused by human papillomavirus), callous tissue debridement, chemical peels in dermatology, and tattoo removal. Its mechanism of action involves protein denaturation—trichloroacetic acid destroys proteins within cells at the site of application, leading to cell death and subsequent sloughing off of treated tissue[3][6][7]. Outside clinical use, it also serves as a reagent for precipitation of macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, and proteins in biochemistry[1][6][10].
