Overview

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a clear, colorless, volatile liquid with a sweet, chloroform-like odor. Historically, it was used as an inhalation anesthetic and analgesic for dental and surgical procedures, and in veterinary medicine. However, its medical use was largely abandoned by the 1980s, and banned in the US in 1977, due to concerns about its toxicity, including cardiotoxicity, neurological impairment, and its classification as a human carcinogen. Currently, TCE is primarily used as an industrial solvent, particularly for metal degreasing, and in the manufacture of refrigerants and other chemicals. It is also found in various consumer products.
