Overview

Trichoderma harzianum is a naturally occurring fungus widely used as a biocontrol agent in agriculture and horticulture to protect crops from soil-borne diseases, particularly gray mold (Botrytis cinerea). It acts through several mechanisms, including competition for space and nutrients with plant pathogens, direct parasitism of pathogens via the production of hydrolytic enzymes (such as chitinases and glucanases), secretion of antimicrobial compounds, induction of systemic resistance in plants, and enhancement of nutrient uptake. In medicine, extracts are used for allergenic testing due to their ability to provoke immune responses such as increased histamine release and IgG production. The strain T‑39 is specifically registered as an active ingredient in biopesticides. Products containing this fungus are considered safe for humans when used according to label directions but may cause irritation upon direct exposure[1][2][3][4][5][6].
