Overview

Trichoderma viride is a filamentous fungus widely used as a biofungicide and biological control agent in agriculture. It is applied to seeds and soil to suppress plant diseases caused by pathogenic fungi such as Rhizoctonia, Pythium, Fusarium species, Macrophomina phaseolina, and others. The mechanism of action involves competitive exclusion (outcompeting pathogens for space and nutrients), secretion of antifungal compounds (including cell wall-degrading enzymes and antibiotics), direct parasitism of pathogenic fungi, induction of systemic resistance in plants (triggering plant defense responses), and promotion of plant growth. In medicine, Trichoderma viride extract is used as a non-standardized fungal allergenic extract for allergy testing; it can provoke allergic reactions by increasing histamine release and stimulating cell-mediated immunity[1][2][3][6].
