Overview
Trichosanthis pericarpium is the dried mature pericarp of Trichosanthes kirilowii Maxim or Trichosanthes rosthornii Harms, widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. It has a long history of use for treating precordial pain and as an adjuvant therapy to improve blood circulation and resolve stasis in patients with coronary heart diseases. Phytochemical studies have identified alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, sterols, amino acids, and nucleotides among its constituents[4][1]. Modern research indicates that extracts from trichosanthis pericarpium can inhibit platelet aggregation and thrombosis formation. In vitro studies show protective effects on cardiomyocytes subjected to hypoxia/reoxygenation injury by enhancing cell viability and reducing apoptosis—effects likely mediated via activation of the PI3K-AKT-NO signaling pathway[4][5]. Animal studies also suggest it enhances mobilization of endothelial progenitor cells and upregulates VEGF, eNOS (endothelial nitric oxide synthase), NO (nitric oxide), and MMP-9 expression during acute myocardial ischemia[4][5].
