Trichuris suis ova (TSO), also known by the code name CNDO-201, consists of the microscopic, embryonated eggs of the porcine whipworm. It is an orally administered, experimental immunomodulator being investigated for the treatment of autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. The therapeutic rationale is based on the "hygiene hypothesis," which posits that a lack of exposure to certain microorganisms and parasites in modern environments may contribute to immune system dysregulation. [2, 7] By introducing the non-pathogenic (in humans) helminth eggs, the therapy aims to restore immune homeostasis. [6, 7] Ingested ova are intended to transiently colonize the gut, where they hatch and are thought to modulate the host's immune system, notably by down-regulating pro-inflammatory Th1 and Th17 responses and promoting a regulatory environment with increased Th2 and regulatory T cell (Treg) activity. [1, 2, 6] Clinical trials have evaluated TSO in conditions such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, psoriasis, and autism spectrum disorder, although many have been terminated or failed to show significant efficacy over placebo. [6, 8, 13]
