Trichuris trichiura, commonly known as the human whipworm, is a parasitic roundworm (helminth) that causes trichuriasis. The proposed mechanism involves modulating the host's immune response, specifically promoting goblet cell hyperplasia and mucus production through T helper 2 (T(H)2) cytokines and Interleukin-22 (IL-22), while reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-17 (IL-17).
