Trichuris trichiura, commonly known as the human whipworm, is a parasitic roundworm (helminth) that causes trichuriasis. It is being investigated for its therapeutic potential in inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis. The proposed mechanism involves modulating the host's immune response, specifically promoting goblet cell hyperplasia and mucus production through T helper 2 (T(H)2) cytokines and Interleukin-22 (IL-22), while reducing pro-inflammatory cytokines like Interleukin-17 (IL-17).
