Overview

Trichuris trichiura egg inoculum refers to a preparation containing the embryonated eggs of the parasitic roundworm Trichuris trichiura, also known as whipworm. These eggs are barrel-shaped, thick-shelled, and possess polar plugs at each end[1][7]. When ingested by humans, the eggs hatch in the small intestine—mediated by contact with intestinal bacteria—and develop into adult worms in the large intestine[5][8]. The mechanism of action is based on deliberate infection with T. trichiura to modulate host immune responses; this approach has been explored experimentally for potential therapeutic effects in immune-mediated diseases such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and other autoimmune conditions. The primary indication under investigation is immunomodulation via controlled helminthic therapy rather than direct anti-infective use.
