Overview

Triclocarban is a synthetic antibacterial agent belonging to the class of substituted ureas. It was widely used in bar and liquid soaps, body washes, deodorants, detergents, cleansing lotions, and wipes as an antimicrobial ingredient. Triclocarban acts primarily as a bacteriostatic agent against gram-positive bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus by destabilizing bacterial cell membranes and inhibiting enoyl-(acyl-carrier protein) reductase (ENR), an enzyme involved in fatty acid synthesis in bacteria. This inhibition disrupts cell membrane synthesis and leads to bacterial growth inhibition. Triclocarban is structurally related to triclosan but has been phased out or banned from over-the-counter consumer antiseptic wash products in several countries due to concerns about safety and the potential for promoting antibiotic resistance[1][2][3][5][8].
