Triclosan + chlorhexidine is a combination of two broad-spectrum antiseptic and antibacterial agents, used primarily for topical application to reduce or prevent bacterial colonization on the skin or mucous membranes. Triclosan is a phenolic compound with antibacterial and antifungal properties, commonly found in consumer products such as soaps, toothpastes, and surgical scrubs. It acts by inhibiting fatty acid synthesis in bacteria, thereby disrupting cell membrane function[6][8]. Chlorhexidine is a cationic bisbiguanide antiseptic effective against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well as some yeasts; it disrupts microbial cell membranes and precipitates cellular contents[2][7]. The combination leverages the additive or synergistic effects of both agents to enhance antimicrobial efficacy while potentially reducing side effects associated with higher concentrations of either agent alone. This combination has been studied for use in dermatological conditions (such as atopic dermatitis) and for pathogen reduction on skin[4]. Both agents are also individually used in oral care (mouthwashes), wound care, preoperative skin preparation, and coated medical devices.
