Trientine is a small molecule copper-chelating agent used primarily for the treatment of Wilson's disease, an inherited disorder characterized by excessive accumulation of copper in the body, particularly in the liver and brain. It works by binding to excess copper to form a stable, soluble complex that is readily excreted via the kidneys in urine. Trientine may also inhibit intestinal absorption of copper by chelating it within the gastrointestinal tract. It is indicated for patients who are intolerant to penicillamine or when penicillamine therapy is clinically inappropriate. The drug was first developed in Germany and approved by the FDA as a second-line treatment for Wilson's disease[1][3][6][7].
