Overview

Trifexis is a veterinary combination drug composed of spinosad and milbemycin oxime, administered orally as a chewable tablet for monthly use in dogs. Spinosad acts as an ectoparasiticide, targeting and killing adult fleas by activating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChR) in insects, leading to paralysis and death. Milbemycin oxime is a broad-spectrum antiparasitic macrolide that prevents heartworm disease and controls intestinal nematodes such as hookworms, roundworms, and whipworms, by binding to glutamate-gated chloride channels (GluCl) in the nervous system of susceptible parasites, resulting in paralysis and death. The product is FDA-approved for use in dogs and is effective against fleas (Ctenocephalides felis), heartworms (Dirofilaria immitis), hookworms (Ancylostoma caninum), roundworms (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina), and whipworms (Trichuris vulpis).
