Overview

Trifluoperazine is a first-generation (typical) antipsychotic of the phenothiazine class, primarily used to treat schizophrenia and, on a short-term basis, certain types of anxiety in patients unresponsive to other medications. It works mainly by blocking postsynaptic mesolimbic dopaminergic Dopamine receptor D1 and Dopamine receptor D2 in the brain, thereby reducing abnormal excitement and lowering dopamine activity. This action helps control symptoms such as delusions and hallucinations associated with schizophrenia. Trifluoperazine also exhibits Calmodulin antagonism and can affect calcium signaling in cardiac cells, which may contribute to some of its side effects. The drug is available as an oral tablet under various strengths[1][2][3][5][6].
