Overview

Trifluoromethylphenylpiperazine (TFMPP) is a synthetic small-molecule phenylpiperazine derivative that acts as a non-selective serotonin (5-HT) receptor agonist and serotonin releasing agent. It exhibits affinity for several serotonin receptor subtypes, including 5-HT1A, 5-HT1B, 5-HT1D, and 5-HT2. TFMPP is primarily known as a recreational designer drug, often sold under the street name Legal X, and is frequently co-administered with benzylpiperazine (BZP) to mimic the entactogenic and stimulant effects of MDMA (Ecstasy). While it has no approved therapeutic indications, it has been the subject of clinical research, including a randomized placebo-controlled trial sponsored by the New Zealand Ministry of Health to evaluate its effects on driving performance. Adverse effects associated with its use include anxiety, insomnia, nausea, vomiting, and seizures.
