Overview

Triflupromazine is an antipsychotic medication of the phenothiazine class. It acts primarily as a dopamine receptor D1 and dopamine receptor D2 antagonist, reducing abnormal dopamine activity in the brain. This mechanism underlies its use in treating serious mental and emotional disorders such as schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. Triflupromazine is also used to control violent behavior during acute psychotic episodes, severe nausea and vomiting, severe hiccups, and moderate to severe pain in some hospitalized patients. Its antiemetic effect is mainly due to blockade of dopamine receptor D2 in the chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ) and vomiting center. Additionally, it antagonizes muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M1 and muscarinic acetylcholine receptor M2 as well as serotonin receptor 5-HT2B[1][3][4][6].
