Overview

Triiodothyronine sulfate sodium (T3S sodium salt) is an investigational small-molecule thyromimetic drug developed by Bracco S.p.A. Its active ingredient is 3,5,3′-triiodothyronine sulfate, a sulfate conjugate of the active thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3). The drug acts as a prodrug that is converted to T3 in the body, targeting thyroid hormone receptors. It is being investigated for the treatment of hypothyroidism, including forms arising from autoimmune thyroid disease, thyroidectomy, hormonal production defects, and congenital hypothyroidism, as well as disorders related to reduced activity of type I 5′-iodothyronine monodeiodinase. Clinical studies have included a Phase 2 single-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled pharmacokinetics study in healthy adult volunteers in Italy evaluating single oral doses of 40, 60, or 80 mcg, as well as a Phase II open-label study in hypothyroid patients assessing its efficacy and tolerability as an add-on to L-T4 therapy.
