Overview

Trimebutine is a small molecule spasmolytic agent primarily used to regulate gastrointestinal motility and relieve abdominal pain. It acts as a weak agonist at mu-opioid receptors and also exhibits antimuscarinic (anticholinergic) activity by antagonizing muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. This dual mechanism allows it to modulate both hyperactive and hypoactive gut smooth muscle activity. Trimebutine is commonly used for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), functional dyspepsia (FD), chronic gastritis-related symptoms, and other lower gastrointestinal tract motility disorders. It is most often marketed in the form of its maleate salt (trimebutine maleate). While not FDA-approved in the United States, it is approved and widely used in countries such as China, Japan, Canada, and others[3][5][6].
