Overview

Trimeprazine + prednisolone is a fixed-dose veterinary combination drug containing an antihistamine (trimeprazine) and a glucocorticoid corticosteroid (prednisolone). Trimeprazine acts as an H1 histamine receptor antagonist, reducing the effects of histamine released during allergic reactions and thereby decreasing itching and suppressing cough. Prednisolone is a synthetic glucocorticoid that exerts anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects by modulating gene expression to inhibit multiple inflammatory pathways. The combination is primarily used in dogs for the relief of pruritus (itching) associated with allergies or various skin disorders, as well as for its antitussive (cough suppressant) properties. It may also be used off-label in cats. The combination allows for lower doses of corticosteroid compared to monotherapy, potentially reducing steroid-related side effects[1][3][6][7][9].
