Overview

This investigational antimicrobial catheter lock solution (CLS) is a triple-combination formulation developed by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. It consists of trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX), edetate calcium disodium (EDTA), and ethanol. The solution is specifically designed to prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) and maintain catheter patency by preventing catheter occlusion in patients with malignancies who require central or peripheral venous catheters. Its multi-mechanistic approach includes the inhibition of bacterial dihydrofolate reductase and dihydropteroate synthase by TMP-SMX to block nucleic acid synthesis, the chelation of divalent cations by EDTA to disrupt microbial biofilms and provide anticoagulant properties, and the disruption of microbial cell membranes by ethanol.
