Overview
Trimipramine is a tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) primarily used to treat depression. It is structurally similar to imipramine but has more pronounced antihistaminic and sedative properties. Unlike typical TCAs, its mechanism of action is not fully understood; it appears to decrease the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin in the brain, thereby increasing their levels and helping restore mental balance[1][3][4]. However, some studies suggest that trimipramine has only weak effects on noradrenergic systems compared to other TCAs, and its clinical efficacy may involve atypical actions on central nervous system pathways[6]. Trimipramine also exhibits anxiolytic and sedative effects, making it useful for patients with comorbid anxiety or sleep disturbances[8].
