Drug intelligence / Profile preview
TRIO-VLP is a virus-like particle (VLP)-based vaccine displaying an epitope of TRIO, an Anopheles mosquito salivary protein. Developed by researchers at the University of New Mexico, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, and Vaxine, the vaccine is designed to target the mosquito salivary protein TRIO, which normally enhances the mobility and dispersal of Plasmodium sporozoites in the dermis. By eliciting anti-TRIO antibodies, the vaccine aims to inhibit sporozoite motility and protect against malaria infection. In preclinical mouse models, TRIO-VLP immunization generated high-titer, long-lasting antibody responses and provided modest protection against malaria challenge, which can be combined with Plasmodium-targeted vaccines like CSP-VLPs.
