Overview

Triphasil is a combination oral contraceptive (birth control pill) containing two synthetic hormones—levonorgestrel (a progestin) and ethinyl estradiol (an estrogen)—administered in a triphasic regimen. It primarily prevents pregnancy by suppressing ovulation through inhibition of gonadotropin secretion. Additional contraceptive effects include thickening of cervical mucus to hinder sperm penetration and altering the endometrial lining to reduce the likelihood of implantation. Each 28-day cycle consists of three phases with varying hormone doses, followed by seven inert tablets. The product does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. The brand has been discontinued in the U.S., but generic equivalents may be available[1][3][4][5][6].
