Overview

Tripterygium wilfordii multiglycoside (TWM) is a purified botanical extract derived from the root of the *Tripterygium wilfordii* Hook. f. vine, a plant long used in traditional Chinese medicine. It is a regulated pharmaceutical product in China, primarily utilized for its potent immunosuppressive and anti-inflammatory properties. TWM contains a complex mixture of diterpenoids (such as triptolide) and triterpenoids (such as celastrol) that modulate immune responses by inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and suppressing the activity of T-lymphocytes. It is widely prescribed for autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and various forms of nephritis. Recent clinical investigations have expanded its potential use to degenerative conditions such as hand osteoarthritis.
