Overview

The trivalent hemagglutinin nanoparticle influenza vaccine is a recombinant protein nanoparticle vaccine candidate developed by Novavax. It utilizes a proprietary technology where purified hemagglutinin (HA) proteins self-assemble into stable nanoparticles, presenting the antigen in a multivalent format to the immune system. This specific formulation is trivalent, containing HA antigens from three influenza strains (typically two A strains and one B strain). The vaccine is formulated with Novavax's saponin-based Matrix-M adjuvant, which is designed to enhance the magnitude and breadth of the immune response, particularly in older adults who often exhibit diminished responses to standard influenza vaccines. While early clinical development (Phase 1/2) utilized this trivalent formulation, the program subsequently advanced to a quadrivalent formulation (NanoFlu) which demonstrated non-inferiority to licensed high-dose vaccines in Phase 3 trials.
