Overview

The trivalent inactivated COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Chile (PUC) is an experimental whole-virus vaccine designed to provide broad protection against multiple variants of SARS-CoV-2. It incorporates inactivated viral particles from three distinct lineages: the ancestral strain (CZ02), the Delta variant, and the Omicron variant. The vaccine is produced by growing the viruses in Vero cells, followed by inactivation and formulation with aluminum hydroxide as an adjuvant. It is primarily being evaluated in clinical trials as a booster dose for adults who have previously completed a primary vaccination schedule, with the aim of eliciting superior immunogenicity against circulating variants of concern compared to monovalent ancestral vaccines like CoronaVac.
