Trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV or IIV3) is a synthetic vaccine composed of three inactivated (killed) influenza viruses—two different type A strains (H1N1 and H3N2 subtypes) and one type B strain (Victoria lineage). It is administered by injection and works by stimulating the immune system to produce antibodies against these specific viral antigens. The primary indication is the prevention of seasonal influenza infection. The mechanism of action involves exposure to viral hemagglutinin proteins from the selected strains; this induces an adaptive immune response that provides protection if exposed to circulating viruses matching those included in the vaccine[1][3][4]. TIV does not cause flu illness as it contains only killed virus or purified viral proteins[4]. It is recommended for annual use in all individuals aged 6 months and older[1].
