Overview

The trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) associated with the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) refers to the seasonal influenza vaccine formulations evaluated in pediatric clinical trials, such as the TITRE (TIV Infant/Toddler Response Evaluation) study. This vaccine is designed to protect against three distinct influenza virus strains: two subtypes of Influenza A (typically H1N1 and H3N2) and one lineage of Influenza B (either Victoria or Yamagata). The vaccine consists of inactivated (killed) virus particles that are unable to cause disease but retain the ability to stimulate the immune system. Its primary mechanism of action involves the induction of neutralizing antibodies against the viral hemagglutinin (HA) protein, which prevents the virus from attaching to and entering host cells. The BCCDC's research specifically investigated the immunologic response in infants and toddlers, focusing on the necessity of a two-dose primary series and the impact of lineage mismatch or switch in the Influenza B component.
