Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) is a seasonal flu vaccine designed to protect against three different strains of the influenza virus—two subtypes of influenza A (H1N1 and H3N2) and one lineage of influenza B. It is an inactivated (killed-virus) split virion or subunit vaccine administered intramuscularly or intradermally. The standard adult dose contains 15 μg of each purified hemagglutinin antigen per strain, with higher doses available for older adults to enhance immunogenicity. TIV works by inducing an immune response against the included viral antigens, providing protection if exposed to circulating strains that match those in the formulation. The primary indication is prevention of seasonal influenza infection[5][8]. Efficacy varies by season and population but has been shown to be effective in healthy adults[1]. Multiple manufacturers worldwide produce TIV for annual vaccination campaigns.
