Overview

The 2016-2017 flu vaccine refers to the seasonal trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine (TIV) formulations used during the 2016-2017 Northern Hemisphere influenza season. These vaccines contain inactivated antigens from three influenza strains: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)pdm09-like virus, A/Hong Kong/4801/2014 (H3N2)-like virus, and B/Brisbane/60/2008-like virus. In clinical research, such as the trial conducted by the University Health Network (NCT03139565), these vaccines were used to compare the immunogenicity of high-dose formulations (e.g., Sanofi Pasteur's Fluzone High-Dose) against standard-dose formulations (e.g., GSK's Fluviral) in specific populations like solid organ transplant recipients. The vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to produce hemagglutination inhibition antibodies and cellular immune responses against the viral hemagglutinin protein, thereby preventing seasonal influenza infection.
