Trivalent inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) is a sterile suspension containing three strains of poliovirus—Type 1 (Mahoney), Type 2 (MEF-1), and Type 3 (Saukett)—that are grown in Vero cell cultures and then inactivated with formaldehyde. The vaccine is administered by intramuscular or subcutaneous injection. It induces IgG-mediated immunity, preventing the progression of poliovirus infection to viremia and protecting motor neurons from damage, thereby eliminating the risk of paralytic polio. Each dose contains defined D-antigen units for each serotype and may include trace amounts of antibiotics used during production as well as preservatives such as 2-phenoxyethanol[4][7][9]. The primary indication is the prevention of poliomyelitis.
